Pizza Journey

The long awaited Echunga camp-out had finally came around. After a previous Yabbie expedition to Alex’s dad’s 1000 acre property in February we thought we’d try our hand at Yabbie hunting once more. This time around the kids from Zynke Design, Hegs Pegs and Productive Garden Co joined us. It was a stunningly beautiful spring day. Sunny, green fields, cows, sheeps and plenty of dams to choose from. Our hopes were high, the dams were full and we prayed to the Cherax destructor god for a good catch.

Once we setup camp and cracked the first ale, we went out to scope the dams plus also scout out some newly fallen trees for Pizza Journey Oven wood. After the nets were laid, baited with cat food and lamb necks we made our way back to camp to wait it out.

For dinner I made a Beef Bourguignon in our new camp oven. Ive been wanting to break it in, so it was all ready for some slow braises in Pizza Oven. It worked absolutely perfect and will make a great piece of kit for the new outdoor kitchen. An initial check of all the nets tuned up none of our crustaceous quarry so it was decided to leave them in overnight.

The next morning a cracker breaky by Nick and Hannah of Bacon, Scrambly Eggs and mushrooms started the day. With greasy energy on board we loaded up the trailer with a newly fallen red gum. With the laden trailer groaning under the weight of 400kg too much firewood it was time to check the nets. Disappointment 🙁 With 7 nets carefully and strategically placed, all we managed to get was one baby Yabbie and one Duckling. The upside though, is now I have a great idea for  a pizza recipe. Yabbie and Duck Sausage! Stay tuned as this will definitely be on the menu.
